πŸ²πŸ“ Small Batch instructions for Prism grout

In this issue:

  • Mixing small batches of Prism grout
  • Shower pans with liquid waterproofing

I mixed Prism according to the instructions and it didn't go well

Recently, I mixed a bag* of Prism grout to what I thought was the water ratio allowed by instructions and the grout was so stiff it was unusable. Further, they have a certain amount they will allow as additional water. Again, my batch wasn't turning out.

I only tried this once, so maybe I did something wrong. But this inspired me to come up with a small batch ratio for Prism grout.

Small batch ratios

Making small batches solves another problem: one bag of grout makes a big batch. If you are installing large format tile, you are wasting a lot of grout by mixing full bags only.

This provides the opportunity to make more reasonable-sized batches. Since Prism is a fast-setting grout, this makes a lot of sense.

Scroll down to the bottom where I've put the small batch recipe. I think I'll leave it in that space in future issues.

And, yes, I will look to add other products and brands. Which would you like to see? You can reply to the email and let me know.

*Prism is sold in two different-sized boxes. The smaller box contains 1 bag and the bigger one contains 2.

DIYers LOVE this Method for Waterproofing- But I don't Recommend it

Trowelable and 'paintable' waterproofing products are considerably more appealing to apply than a sheet membrane that goes on like wallpaper. I understand why people prefer them.

However, they are more prone to user-error. In fact, I know several professional tile setters who have moved on from them after having some sort of issue.

The products have their place but for critical areas like shower pans, I don't recommend them.

Some are better than others

If you do prefer this style of waterproofing, there are products that, in my opinion, are better choices than others. Click the image above if you want to find out more.

Prism grout instructions:

Pour 16 fluid ounces of cool clean water into a mixing bucket and add 51 ounces (by volume) of Prism powder. Mix by hand for 5 minutes. Let it stand for 5 minutes and remix. If you want to weigh the powder, you want about 1800 grams.

For wall work, you may want to thicken it up slightly (caution: it is fast-setting grout). Add about 1-2 ounces of powder or about 50 grams. I wouldn't exceed 1900 total grams of powder.
